Field Notes

Slow walks, small birds, and the occasional bad photo.

Herons at low tide

Three grey herons stood on the mudflats for most of the morning, perfectly still, each about forty metres from the next. When one finally struck, the other two did not even turn their heads.

Notes on a cheap telephoto

Soft at the long end, slow to focus, and still better than leaving it at home. Most of what I get wrong is shutter speed, not the lens.

First swifts

They came back on the same week as last year. Heard them before I saw them.
